Early Friendship - Nell Scott

Although I had been steadily drawn to Maltese from my earliest days in the dog world, I began my career as a "Toy Group" exhibitors with Chihuahuas. The Chihuahuas were certainly less of a handful preparation-wise, and with young children this was a big consideration!

In an effort to learn all that I could about the breed, I became a member of the Chihuahua Club of NSW and in the ensuing years held various offices; Secretary, Treasurer, Committee Member. It was at this time that I met another lady who shared my interest in both the Chihuahua breed and the Maltese. Her name is Nell Scott, and she is today an honorary life member of both the Chihuahua Club of NSW and the Maltese Club of NSW (a club in which she served as Secretary for over 17 years!). Nell and her late husband George bred under the "Silvertail" prefix, and though Nell has long since retired from actively breeding/exhibiting, we remain the closest of friends.

These early days saw me campaigning Chihuahuas (both coats) across four States of Australia, winning Royal Challenges (a most prestigious breed level win in this country) and even Best in Show awards. When Nell's husband sadly passed away, which left her the enormous responsibility of running both the breeding and boarding kennels, I added Nell's show team to my own and continued to notch up good wins. When Nell retired, I took over the role of Secretary of the Maltese Club of NSW, and had the great honour to be the last person to judge the NSW Maltese Specialty on the Silvertail Showground, set up by George and Nell, and for many years the home of the Maltese Club Show.

Through Nell I learned much about both breeds and dogs in general. I also came to realize that it was the Maltese breed, which would become a very important part of my life. During these years I was able to establish myself not only as a breeder, exhibitor and office-bearer, but also as a judge, enabling me to enjoy almost every aspect of the dog world.

Today the Chihuahuas have been replaced totally by the Maltese, but the friendships to which they introduced me remain as strong as ever.
