MALTESE DOGS IN AUSTRALIA. July 1983

Maltese dogs were bred and exhibited in Victoria from 50-70 years ago. At that time breed and show the Victorian Poultry and Kennel Club maintained records, which is still in existence. Present day records in Victoria however date only from 1929 or 1930

The only breeder and exhibitor of Maltese in Victoria in the 1950?s was Mr H V Wilson of East Malvern, and the only Maltese registered in Victoria were two imported by Mr Wilson from England, Leckhampton Neptune and Victoria Lily,

In South Australia, Maltese were exhibited at the shows many years ago, but in 1953 there had been no registrations of Maltese for 25 years or more.

In Queensland the late Mrs. E Pike imported Ch Invicta Ambrose from England in 1938 and then proceeded to mate him with various Australian bred bitches.

In New South Wales there is a lovely story about Mrs Cora R Gibbs of Balgamlah who had her first Maltese about 88 years ago, when her son was a baby and just learning to walk, they called the little dog BULLY, her baby son would pull himself up from the floor by holding the little dogs hair and after he had (deservedly) received a few bites Mrs Gibbs gave the little dog away to a Rev. Mr. Kelly of Mill Thorpe.

Two years later while attending a dog show in this town with her mother and father, her mother was attracted by a little dog jumping up at her very excitedly and found that is was BULLY. At the end of the day when leaving to return home they found BULLY sitting on the step of their cat waiting for them. Mrs. Gibbs had many Maltese since then and owned a Maltese named Ruffles who weighed 5 pounds at the age of 10 months.

In Western Australia in 1953 there was only one breeder Mrs M E De Palette, nee Johnson who bought several Maltese from England when emigrating in 1949 and went on to win many prizes.

Many others soon joined all of these early breeders. Several ladies? who immigrated to Australia from England brought their dogs out with them.
