Worms and Vaccination

HEARTWORM: You can start your puppy on daily Heartworm preventative when your pup has settled into your home and if you wish to put your pup onto monthly Heartworm when you have your permanent vaccination consult your Vet about monthly Heartworm preventative.

WORMING AND VACCINATION

Your puppy has already been wormed before leaving, and can be given another dose in ONE week's time. We use a broad-spectrum dog wormer that is suitable for puppies for Round, Hook and Whipworms. Tapeworm treatment is done separately targeted at this worm (Flea tapeworm). In our experience that broad-spectrum wormers are not always 100% successful against all worms. Please follow the recommended dosage and instructions of the manufaturer. Normally there is no need to starve your pup prior to worming. If you are having problems giving your pup the worming tablet you can cut the tablet up and give to your puppy in a piece of your puppy's favorite food unless the manufacturer states otherwise. There should be no harmful side effects with these particular drugs, but NEVER worm a pup it if appears off-color. Occasionally he may vomit back the medicine. Give him a smaller dose the next day after feeding. When taking your pup to the Vet for his permanent needle at three months of age, if you are worried, take along a sample of his faeces in a bottle so that the Vet can analysis. This is the soundest way of detecting if your pup has worms or not.

Regarding Vaccination.

Your puppy has been given his first Vaccination needle, which is only a temporary needle. Your puppy is unable to have his permanent yearly needle until 13 weeks of age. So until he has had his permanent yearly needle try and keep your puppy at home as much as possible and try to avoid strangers handling him, as sometimes outsiders may be unwitting carriers of germs via clothing, hands etc., especially when handling strays or animals from unknown areas. It really pays to be a bit "fussy" this way until your puppy is over three months. Take your vaccination Card with you so your Vet can follow on with the correct Vaccination.
